Take his car for an oil change sometime. If he usually does this, reverse the roles and you do it. He will be so happy that you took the time to take care of this. Try to find out what kind of oil he has been using. Be sure you use the same kind, or this little tip could backfire. Try to go to the same place he does to change the oil, look for that little sticker they put on his car the last time it was changed.
